Does leather fray if you cut it?

The raw edges of real leather will not fray, but most leatherworkers burnish the edges so they look nice. Faux leather also does not fray, but the raw edges should be finished.

While you can definitely use scissors to cut leather, it's not ideal. On thin leather you might not get a nice straight cut because you cut line can move a little every time you move the scissors to take another snip. On thick leather, you might not be able to cut it at all.

To burnish, apply water, wax or gum tragacanth to the leather edge. Rub a burnishing tool vigorously back and forth with a good amount of pressure; you want to create heat to work the wax or gum into the leather fibers. This compresses the leather fibers and seals the edge against moisture.

As a general rule, nonwoven materials don't fray—certainly not as easily as most woven or knit fabrics. This non-fraying property is one of the main reasons nonwovens are preferred over those easily-fraying counterparts.

Should you cut leather wet or dry?

You don't need fancy leather moisturizer to take care of your favourite leather jacket. Petroleum jelly does the job just as well. Apply, rub it in, wipe off the excess, and you're ready to go.

After heating the oil, dab the cloth into it and gently rub the leather with the cloth. The oil will soak into the leather. Do one section at a time until the entire surface has been covered. Then, wipe off any extra oil and allow the leather to dry overnight.

The zigzag stitch is another way to finish raw edges and prevent the fabric from fraying. To use this method, simply set your sewing machine to a zigzag stitch and sew along the edge of the fabric. Then, trim away any excess fabric. The zigzags will help to secure the fabric and prevent it from fraying.

The lint will stick to the hairspray and lift easily off of the clothes, leaving them clean and lint-free. When there's no needle threader in sight, reach for a can of hair spray. Spray the end of the thread, then pinch it with your fingertips to compress stray strands and prevent fraying.
